The Cottage |
Gun End CottageGun End is a clutch of houses with an old school at its heart where the local community still get together on a regular basis. You would be welcomed at any events taking place during your stay. Across the lane is Gun End Cottage, built in 1904 by Sir Philip Brocklehurst of Swythamley Hall to house the teacher, Sarah Clarke. Newly renovated, the house is full of character with leaded windows, several original fireplaces and other period features. A beautiful mullioned porch draws visitors into the hall with its Minton tiled floor. The hall opens into the lounge with open fire and comfortable seating for eight, and a ground floor bedroom with king-size or twin beds as required. The well-equipped kitchen leads off the lounge and has a large oak table and settle with ample space for a house full of diners. Through the kitchen is a sun-room with stunning views over the fields and hills, and access to the shower room with shower, toilet and basin, and to the boiler room which can be used for drying wet outdoor gear. Upstairs are two king-size bedrooms and a twin, plus another bathroom with bath and shower. The established gardens are a delight with lawns, mature trees and flower beds, plus outdoor seating for eight and a barbecue. Swythamley is a farming community on the Staffordshire/Cheshire border, in an undiscovered corner of the Peak District amidst glorious countryside.
